VIDEO PROJECTION

THE CAPE OF STORMS SHIPPING FORECAST

Since the 1600s the Cape of Storms has been notorious: at least 3000 ships have been wrecked along a coastline where rugged rocks, deep winds and two oceans clash to create sudden disaster.

On dry land, we’re never close enough to know how harrowing a storm at sea is - especially one that sinks a ship. Imagine standing outside the South African National Gallery and looking up to see a massive wave arching above you, about to crash.

The audio follows the BBC Shipping Forecast style, an intonation of the Beaufort Scale that sailors, meteorologists and maritime officials use to describe the state of the sea and the escalation of the wind. It runs at a gentle 6 minutes, taking the audience from Force 0 to Force 12, hurricane.

First iteration: Projection on the facade of The Iziko South African National Gallery, The Art of Light Group Show, 9 - 12 April 2026

The Cape of Storms Shipping Forecast is available and has been designed as a projection for a gallery room, where the sound of music, waves and intonation of the voice surrounds the viewer.
